Designing a Trusted Community Marketplace: A Conceptual UI/UX Project

The Challenge: Creating a Local Alternative to Impersonal National Platforms

While national platforms like Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace exist, they often feel cluttered, impersonal, and can lack a true sense of local community. A group of (hypothetical) Cheshire-based entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to create a trusted, community-focused platform exclusively for the North West.

They needed a mobile app that would solve three key challenges:

  1. Overcoming User Friction: Competitor apps were often complicated. The new app had to be significantly easier and faster for someone to post an item for sale.

  2. Building Community Trust: To succeed, the platform needed to feel safer and more reliable than its anonymous, larger rivals.

  3. Delivering Hyper-Local Relevance: The app’s core feature had to be its ability to effortlessly connect people with items and services right in their immediate vicinity.

The Solution: A User-First Design Focused on Simplicity, Safety, and Proximity

WDA’s strategy for this conceptual project was to create a best-in-class user experience that would serve as the foundation for the hypothetical client’s success.

  1. Competitive Analysis & User Flow Mapping: Our process began with a deep analysis of the user journeys of major competitors like Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace to identify common pain points. Our team then mapped out a simplified flow for both buyers and sellers, focusing on reducing the number of steps to post an ad or contact a seller.

  2. Wireframing for an Intuitive UI: Based on this streamlined flow, we developed a series of low-fidelity wireframes. The focus was on an uncluttered layout and an intuitive hierarchy, making the app feel immediately familiar and easy to use.

  3. A Clean & Trustworthy Design System: Finally, we developed a clean and modern UI kit. A friendly and accessible colour palette, clear typography, and an emphasis on user profiles were chosen to make the app feel welcoming and trustworthy, perfectly reflecting the “Cheshire Exchange” brand.
